Despite dire predictions to the contrary, Dune has thrived in the post-Covid, theater-shaking era. The film made bringing Americans back to theaters a seemingly impossible double feat.

Getting people interested in HBO Max. It did this with the quiet serenity of its lead performances, a dark and eerie sense of mystery, and the sheer epic scale of it all. Meanwhile, director Denis Villeneuve did something truly remarkable.
The Secret Sounds That Make Up 'dune'
Also called "thopters," these planes are one of the forgotten gems of Frank Herbert's original novel. In the context of the 1960s, when Herbert's first Dune stories and novels were published, they make perfect sense. Experts of the time believed that humanity would naturally move on from the disappointment of conventional airplanes and helicopters.
Just combine Leonardo da Vinci's original design with the new nuclear power and we're off to the races. But ornithopters—heavier than antennae based on insect-like flight—never really caught on. Here in the 21st century, our military is still trying to figure out the technology.
Thopters never make sense when they display on screen. The proportions of the 1984 film were wildly wrong. Kyle McLachlan's hyperactivity had tiny copper rocks floating in the air. Meanwhile, in the 1992 video game
(the first game to popularize real-time strategy), they fluttered across the screen like tiny bugs. The legs were very pointed, the wings very short and the engine was very underpowered.

Villenuve clearly put a lot of thought into the thopters he created for this film, which finally feel like a working airship. One of the first images of the Thopter in flight is Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) at the wheel. The ship is huge, powerful and loud. In the 4DX theater where I saw the film, the entire building hummed, the synchronized beat of its wings (thanks to clever fan work) filling the air around me.
In the air, Villneuve's thopters are anything but clumsy. Leto's actions are controlled and deliberate. Ships don't so much float in place as they make room for themselves from the wind and keep their course in the air as they move forward on powerful twin engines. Then, when the moment is right, they fold their wings again and turn to the ground like vultures. Their presence makes the Harvester's rescue crew exciting at the beginning of the film. Later, Duncan Idaho (Jason Mamoa) runs over a group of landing Harkonnen ships and weaves in and out of fire on his way out. Both of these scenes show the audience what mastery of the plane looks like and show a kind of mastery for Paul Atreides (Timothy Chalamet).

Thopters play an important role in the climax of the film. As I watched Paul and Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) ride out the sandstorm, I felt what it takes to survive. One moment I was sitting there in silence, and the next I was calling to the screen, “Drop your wings!
Pál's power over the top tern in that scene - and the sandstorm itself - feels like a character growing from childhood to adulthood. He's not just taking over House Atreads, he's preserving his bloodline by saving himself, his mother, and his unborn sister. He is stuck in the cockpit and follows in his father's footsteps.
If Villeneuve had already - finally - shown the audience how the Thopter actually handles in the air, it wouldn't be so powerful. This successful crash landing represents the first real steps in Paul's transformation into Muad'Dib, who will help liberate the entire planet, and it was not so powerful to me until a trip to the theater.novel in 1965. , his ornithopter was theoretically identical and flying cars. Today, modern inventors are experimenting with working ornithopter prototypes. For the year 2021
, Ornithopters are a common form of travel. Ornithopters in books and movies all share flapping wings. These craft can take off vertically, hover, fly under their own power and glide.

Ornithopters can switch between gliding and jetting. Some hummingbirds can even complete short flights in space.
Imaginary ornithopters are better than helicopters. With a jet engine, they can fold their wings and move faster than a jet. In addition, landing is almost impossible if a helicopter engine fails. On the other hand, an ornithopter pilot who experiences engine failure can adjust the craft's wings and glider.
The director described his visual artists as inspired by the dragonfly. However, he insisted the vehicle should also be "muscular" and resemble a military helicopter. All of its vehicles had to be aerodynamic, so the team quickly pioneered dynamic airfoil designs. The resulting aircraft looks like a cross between a gunship helicopter and a flying insect.

JAG Their only instruments seem to be a stack of analog gauges in front of the pilot. The picture shows no autopilot. What's more, the cockpits are panoramic fishbowls that do little to keep the harsh light of the landscape from the crew.
To film the actors on the flying ornithopter, the crew hung props from a Warner Bros. crane
Ornithopter props actually fly. The crew built several full-scale ornithopter props. Some had cockpits in which working actors flew. Other props included movable walls for movie actors in the cabin.
The filmmakers shot the desert scenes on location in Jordan. They took the ornithopter props to Jordan to film. As full size props weighed 11 tons, transporting them to Africa was no small feat. First, they loaded the props onto an Antonov AN-124 cargo plane. Then they used a huge crane to transport them to the set in the middle of the desert.

For a dramatic scene, Villeneuve wanted to show the characters clinging to the landing ramp of the bird plane in flight. So he used a crane to hoist the ornithopter into the air, with the artist on board to get the perfect shot.
